I have not made an optical illusion quilt, but I have always been intrigued by Geta Grama's quilts. She has more than a few different patterns in her shop of globe type optical illusions: http://www.getasquiltingstudio.com/quilt-patterns-2 I am not sure of their difficulty, but the pattern images have the techniques used on them (raw edge applique, english paper pieced, etc), so I think that's helpful!
